President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in Uganda on Saturday to participate in the Commonwealth Local Government conference.
During the visit president Rajapaksa will hold bilateral talks with Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni.
“He will be a key note speaker at the conference. The next commonwealth will be hosted by Sri Lanka in two years and so he will the next chair for it.
Last November Uganda President Museveni visited Sri Lanka at the invitation of his counterpart. During the visit Sri Lanka agreed to refurbish Masulita Vocational Training Center in Kakiri. Rajapaksa also will visit Lugazi Sugar Corporation during his four day official visit.
Sri Lanka has per capita income US$2,877 compared to that of Uganda of US$500. The main economic sectors of the country are tourism, tea export, clothing, rice production and other agricultural products. In addition to these economic sectors, overseas employment contributes highly in foreign exchange.
Uganda has continuously supported Sri Lanka where it voted against the resolution on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC in 2012 and 2013.
