Sri Lanka oppositions strike against power hike

Sri Lanka opposition parties and trade unions called a nationwide strike today, which parties have pledged will bring the country to a stop and pressure the government into rolling back recently increased power prices.

This is the latest in a string of protests that have erupted in Sri Lanka’s capital since last week, called by opposition parties against a government decision to increase electricity prices.

Sri Lanka Marks 4th Anniversary Of War Victory

Sri Lanka on Saturday celebrates the fourth anniversary of the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels after 30 years of war and the government is expecting economic boom in the post-war country in the next few years.

Addressing the anniversary President Rajapaksa stated that he will never give any chance to terrorism in Sri Lanka.

Ending the civil war is great credit that the current Sri Lankan government earned for itself, which provides a peaceful environment for economic development and tourism.

Sri lanka agrees to coach Uganda cricket team

Uganda's national cricket team has been invited for a tour to Sri Lanka after the east African nation put up an impressive show at the just concluded World Cricket League Division III in Bermuda.

Justine Ligyalingi, the chief executive of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) told Xinhua here Wednesday that the invite also follows a visit to Uganda by the Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Cyclone Mahasen hits Bangladesh

Thousands have moved to shelters in Bangladesh

Cyclone Mahasen has begun crossing Bangladesh's southern coast, as people packed into evacuation shelters.

The storm hit Patuakhali district on Thursday with winds of up to 100 kph (60 mph), and was heading for the ports of Chittagong and Cox's Bazar.

One person has been reported dead, Bangladeshi officials say.

Cyclonic storm 'MAHASEN' may skip Tamil Nadu coast, move towards Bangladesh-Myanmar

Storm Mahasen which affected an area 650 km off Trincomalee, was to expected to move away from the Sri Lanka, the meteorology department of SL said today.

The department said continuous rains and strong winds would continue over the island especially between Mannar and Trincomalee. Strong winds are expected over the  northern sea.

Sri Lanka, Uganda leaders hold bilateral discussions

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is on a four-day official visit to Uganda, met with his Ugandan counterpart, President Yoweri Museveni at the State House in Entebbe Sunday to hold bilateral discussions.

Following the official welcoming ceremony, the two presidents engaged in a one-on-one conversation prior to attending bilateral talks.
