Warren Buffett Twitter followers hit 140,000 in three hours

Legendary US investor Warren Buffett has joined Twitter. Within 10 minutes 10,000 followers and within 3 hours 140,000 followers

The "Sage of Omaha" could become one of Twitter's most followed. Users are flocking to follow him. Within ten minutes of signing up, 10,000 were following him and three hours later the numbers were climbing past 140,000.

His first tweet, under @WarrenBuffett, was "Warren is in the house".

Mr Buffett, chairman and chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway, is famous for shunning new technology.

Despite the surge of followers, Mr Buffett has not been active in seeking people to follow, with his page showing he was following no-one after three hours.

Berkshire Hathaway owns around 80 companies that include railway, clothing, furniture and jewellery firms.

Its insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company's net income.

It also has major investment stakes in companies such as Coca-Cola, the banking group Wells Fargo, and the computer maker IBM.

Mr Buffett made his Twitter debut during a live webcast hosted by Fortune magazine.

This weekend, Mr Buffett will preside over Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meeting in the US city of Omaha.

The meeting is expected to attract more than 35,000 investors. Typically, attendees tweet everything he has to say during the course of the event.
